I try to put some pizzaz into my photos from time to time. This self portrait from 1980 does that quite literally. If you listen carefully to this photo, you can hear my stomach rumbling, anticipating a tasty pizza slice.

My personal favourite spot for a pizza slice was “John’s New York Pizza and Spaghetti Palace” at Danforth and Greenwood. I lived just around the corner, and went there often. (It disappeared quite suddenly in 2004.) After that it was Vesuvio’s, Pizza Gigi, Bitondo’s, and The Big Slice. I’m starting to get hungry!

  1. Iris and myself loved John’s pizza fresh garlic extra cheese hot peppers , always pick up ourselves, one he told us he was retiring , we begged he reconsider but said he had been making delicious pies for over forty years , lost the magic of the spinning pie and when he told us there would be no one that could quite replace him ,sadly he spoke the truth ! Iris bought a pizza stone and we now enjoy pizza on the barbecue with a unique smokey twist ! just keep the pies coming ! Happy Thanksgiving .

John’s was our go-to pizza as well. As I recall, we recommended it to you. Our regular was cheese, garlic, half tomato, and half hot pepper. I used to call up and request a regular and he would have it ready quickly. He put increasingly more garlic on the pizza as time went by, and we had to ask him to dial it back a bit (and I’m a garlic lover!) Hope you enjoy your smokey pizzas, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
